Everything you need to know about studying in the UK — top universities, tuition fees, Chevening scholarship, student visa, and post-study work rights.

Why Study in the UK?

The United Kingdom is home to some of the world's most prestigious universities, including Oxford (#3 QS), Cambridge (#2 QS), Imperial College London (#2 QS), and UCL (#9 QS). UK degrees are globally recognised and typically take 1 year for Masters programmes, making them a time-efficient and cost-effective option compared to 2-year US programmes. The UK also offers a 2-year Graduate Route visa, allowing graduates to work in the UK after completing their degree.

Tuition Fees and Cost of Study

UK tuition fees for international students range from £10,000–£38,000 per year depending on the university and programme. Top universities like Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial charge £26,000–£45,000 per year. However, the 1-year Masters duration means total tuition costs are often comparable to or lower than 2-year programmes in the USA or Australia. Living costs range from £12,000–£18,000 per year, with London being significantly more expensive than other cities.

Chevening Scholarship

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship international scholarship programme. It is fully funded and covers: full tuition fees at any UK university, monthly living allowance (£1,300+ in London), return economy flights, and visa fees. Chevening is highly competitive — only about 1,500 scholarships are awarded globally each year. The application opens in August and closes in November. You need 2+ years of work experience and must demonstrate leadership potential.

UK Student Visa Requirements

To study in the UK, Indian students need a UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4). Requirements include: a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university, proof of English proficiency (IELTS 5.5–7.0 depending on the university), financial proof (£1,334/month for London or £1,023/month outside London for 9 months), and a valid passport. The visa allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays.

Graduate Route Visa — Work After Graduation

The UK Graduate Route visa is a major advantage for international students. After completing a degree at a UK university, you can apply for a 2-year work visa (3 years for PhD graduates) without needing a job offer. This allows you to work in any role, at any salary level, giving you time to find a skilled worker role and potentially transition to long-term residency. This makes the UK one of the most attractive post-study destinations globally.
